How to Prepare Walls for Painting: A Professional Guide

April 20265 min read

Why Preparation Matters

The secret to a beautiful, long-lasting paint job isn't just about the quality of paint you use—it's about how well you prepare the surface. Professional decorators know that preparation can take as much time as the actual painting, and it's time well spent.

Step 1: Clear the Room

Before you begin, move furniture to the centre of the room and cover it with dust sheets. Remove switch plates, socket covers, and any fixtures from the walls. The more access you have to the walls, the better your finish will be.

Step 2: Clean the Walls

Dust and grease can prevent paint from adhering properly. Wash walls with a sugar soap solution to remove dirt, grease, and any residue. This is particularly important in kitchens and bathrooms where grease and moisture can accumulate.

Step 3: Fill Holes and Cracks

Inspect your walls for any damage. Use a quality filler to fill holes, cracks, and dents. For larger holes, you may need to apply filler in layers, allowing each layer to dry before adding more.

Step 4: Sand the Surface

Once your filler has dried completely, sand it smooth using fine-grit sandpaper (around 120-150 grit). Also lightly sand any previously painted surfaces to create a key for the new paint. Always sand in the direction of the wood grain on woodwork.

Step 5: Prime if Needed

New plaster, bare wood, or stained areas may need priming. A good primer seals the surface and ensures even coverage of your topcoat. If you're making a dramatic colour change, a primer can also help achieve the new colour in fewer coats.

Step 6: Protect Your Surroundings

Apply painter's tape to edges you want to protect—around windows, door frames, skirting boards, and ceiling lines. Use quality tape to prevent paint bleeding underneath.
